Meet the Maker #6 – Sitar Makers Series – Scott Hackleman

Meet the Maker: Scott Hackleman, Sitar maker from Point Roberts

A new episode of Meet the Maker is online!

This time we travel to Point Roberts, Washington, USA, to meet Scott Hackleman — instrument maker and restorer, whose involvement with Indian musical instruments goes back more than half a century.

Scott’s fascinating journey took him from woodworking and Western classical music to studying sitar, learning from legendary instrument maker Nodhu Mulik, and one year apprenticing with Kartar Chand Sharma in Delhi.

In our conversation, Scott talks about craftsmanship and jawari, his remarkable Personal Tambura, the relationship between music and meditation, and the delicate balance between respecting tradition and exploring new ideas.

As Scott puts it:

“Combining tradition with innovation is walking a razors-edge.”

An inspiring conversation with a maker for whom building an instrument is about much more than wood and strings.

This interview with Scott Hackleman is part of the Meet the Maker series on SiTAR FAcToRY, where instrument makers from around the world share their work, ideas and inspiration.
