Meet the Maker – Interviews with Instrument Makers

Meet the Maker: Instrument Makers Around the World

This page contains an overview of various instrument makers from around the world.

Instrument making is a unique combination of craftsmanship, creativity and a deep understanding of sound. Behind every instrument is a maker: someone who uses wood, tools and experience to create an object that will ultimately produce music.

In the Meet the Maker series, I talk to instrument makers from different countries. Each maker has their own workshop, techniques and sources of inspiration. Some work within a centuries-old tradition, others seek new forms and experiment with materials and designs. But they all share the same passion: building instruments that come to life in the hands of musicians.

They talk about their work, their ideas about instrument making and the path that led them to their workshop. The result is a collection of stories that show how rich and versatile the craft of instrument making is.

The series aims not only to put the makers themselves in the spotlight, but also to give a glimpse behind the scenes of the building process. Because behind every sound there is a story: the story of the maker.

For me, working primarily as a sitar maker, these reflections resonate strongly with my own daily practice. The sitar is an instrument with a very complex acoustic architecture: multiple sympathetic strings, a curved bridge that shapes the characteristic jawari sound, and a delicate balance between structural tension and resonance. Small adjustments in bridge geometry, string angle or wood density can significantly alter the tonal response and the richness of the sympathetic resonance.

Observing how other instrument makers approach similar questions, how form, material and vibration interact, always offers new insights. Even when the instruments themselves are very different, the underlying principles of resonance, structural balance and acoustic sensitivity remain surprisingly universal.

New interviews are added regularly. Explore the makers below and discover the stories behind their instruments.
