Parda Binding – how to tie sitar frets

How to Tie Sitar Frets (Pardas)

Tying frets is one of the most characteristic aspects of the sitar. Unlike fixed frets, sitar frets are movable and are fixed to the neck with thread. This allows for extremely precise adjustment but also requires the right technique.

In this instructional video, I share my method for tying sitar frets, as practiced in my workshop and as taught to me by Hari Chand & Kartar Chand. I’ll show you in detail how to tie these knots correctly.

  • How to prepare the thread
  • The exact sequence of the knots
  • How to build tension while tying
  • How to finish the knot neatly and durably

Why the knotting technique is so important? An incorrect knot can lead to pardas coming loose or moving. A correct knot, on the other hand, ensures that the fret is securely fastened, remains finely adjustable and optimally supports tone and playability.

Knot technique is something best learned by watching and repeating. This video illustrates that process as clearly as possible. Just watch it carefully…

Two types of thread

Strong nylon fishing line

Available in different gauges and shades.
Recommended gauge is 0,50mm diameter.
Going back and forth twice is enough.

  • Highly durable and very strong
  • Transparent look
  • Produces a tight, stable knot
  • Easier to work with and better suited for those who are still mastering the technique

Traditional (synthetic) thread

Available in different colours.
A minimum level of ductility is recommended.
Going back and forth three times is necessary.

  • Breaks easily
  • Traditional look
  • Slightly softer and more flexible
  • Requires precision when tying because it is less forgiving
