When Archana Kumar contacted me from Germany, she was worried about her beloved Saraswati Veena. A student of Smt. Sujana Vadlamani in Chennai, she regularly performs at local Tyagaraja and Dikshitar concerts. But recently something had changed.
“The notes are not exactly right and I really need help to have it repaired.”
At first glance, it sounded like an ordinary tuning issue. But as is often the case with traditional Indian instruments, the real cause turned out to be far more interesting.
Unlike the sitar, a Saraswati Veena has its frets embedded in a carefully prepared layer of wax. Positioning these frets is one of the most critical stages in the construction of the instrument. Once the wax has cooled and hardened, the fret positions remain fixed and are normally never adjusted again.
So how could an instrument that had played correctly suddenly develop serious intonation problems?
Archana noticed that every higher note became progressively sharper. The further up the fingerboard she played, the larger the pitch error became. This immediately suggested that the problem was not caused by the frets themselves, but somewhere else in the geometry of the instrument.
The Hidden Damage
After discussing the symptoms and examining the veena, the explanation became clear.
During transport from Chennai to Germany, the instrument had almost certainly suffered a heavy impact. Both feet underneath the bridge had broken. Although the damage was not immediately obvious, the consequences were significant.
The bridge had shifted slightly upwards and to the right. As a result, the strings were now sitting higher above the fretboard. Every time a string was pressed onto a fret, it had to travel a greater distance, increasing its tension and causing the played note to become sharper than intended.
At first, this looked like an easy repair.
The broken bridge feet were carefully restored, allowing the bridge to sit lower again. The improvement was immediately noticeable and the intonation became considerably better.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t yet perfect.
There were now two possible ways to continue:
- reduce the bridge height even further;
- move the entire bridge slightly backwards.
The second solution appeared to be the most logical.
This veena is believed to have been built in the 1950s and has undoubtedly experienced decades of playing, climate changes and travel. The impact during transport may also have caused a slight deformation of the neck. Even a very small change in neck geometry is enough to alter the scale length and affect the instrument’s intonation.
The bridge was repositioned in two carefully measured steps.
In total, it moved 9 mm towards the tail of the instrument.
That small adjustment made a remarkable difference.
The remaining intonation errors were reduced to only a few cents across the fretboard—a dramatic improvement compared to the original condition. The instrument once again played comfortably and accurately, allowing Archana to perform with complete confidence.
Repairs like this are a reminder that on traditional Indian instruments, good intonation is rarely about a single component. It is the result of a delicate balance between bridge position, neck geometry, string height and scale length. Sometimes a problem that appears to be simple reveals a much deeper story.
And fortunately, in this case, it had a happy ending.
